Saturday Run Minnehaha into Fort Snelling

I hope this works.  I have posted the route map from www.mapmyrun.com for our run on Saturday.  I did not mark this route very carefully as it is a trial.  It is an out and back run.  We basically are all going to start at Minnehaha Park, near the pavilion and run down the bike path into Fort Snelling.  There will be 1 big hill going down on the way out and the same hill to go up on the way back.  Once we get into Fort Snelling we will continue on the bike path as it winds around Snelling Lake.  You can take this bike path all the way to Post Rd. but the pathway is not clear past the Visitor’s Center at the Post Rd. Entrance.  If I am mapping right, it is approximately 4 miles give or take to the Visitor’s Center at Post Rd.

We have a number of people running different distances tomorrow but I like this route as it will support an 8 miler and shorter.  Those running 10 miles tomorrow will run this course and once back at Minnehaha, head toward the river for an out and back on the MPLS side for the distance left over.

Sound Off!

I just have to YELL AND SCREAM about this cold.  Come on, I am ready for 20 degrees, is that a lot to ask?  Do any of you feel like me or am I being a wimp???  I heard today that it is possible that this January could be the coldest ever if we do not get above 32 degrees this weekend.  My husband Corey flew to Orange County, CA today and called me when he got outside and asked me the question we always ask ourselves this time of year, “Why do we live here (MN)?”  I have to say I was able to respond positively to living here and I love it, despite the cold, because of the seasons and the beauty of our parks and trails and most of all, BECAUSE OF THIS AWESOME GROUP!

Bag of Questions!

As a club I so want us to know more about each other outside of our pace groups.  We get comfortable with those we run with which is fantastic but there are more ladies in the club that you may not encounter and get the pleasure to know if we do not have events that make you meet others.  I hope this makes sense and I was talking to Shelley Novotny about this and we agreed we needed to highlight club members more often on the website and in newsletters.  Shelley believes (as I do) that we all have a story, no life is too boring.  I should add that at the coaches meeting in December we were all talking about how to create more intereaction beyond pace groups.

Shelley came up with a neat idea that I need help creating.  It will be called the Bag of Questions (unless we can come up with a more creative name) and each day/night before practice begins we will have someone pull out a question to answer in front of the group.  Nothing x-rated please!  Just fun questions to get to know each other a bit better such as how you got into running, your favorite vacation destination, etc.  Easy questions that will get a short conversation going and probably create some laughter (like we need more of that)!

Will you take some time to blog your questions for the bag and I will start making up the cards so they are ready to go by the end of March?

This all being said, I also want to highlight a runner each month.  Yes, for you veterans I had planned to do this a year or two ago, well, I am not giving up on myself.  I can do this and get it organized!  My hope is to ask you all the same questions and post them along with your picture on the website.  I would also welcome your story if you would write it up and give me a picture and we will post it.  I am not picking any of you in any particular order.  I really love volunteers!  If I do not get volunteers then I will just randomly pick out of a hat a name and ask  if we can highlight you.  Simple as that!  Let’s resolve to get to know 3-5 new club members outside of your pace group this year.  What a great way to build a stronger community!!!  Thanks for your help with this project!

2009 Resolutions

I was struck recently with the realization that I really have not made 2009 resolutions for my running.  Sure I have said i want to run this race or that race but I have not sat down and really thought about a “theme” for myself this year.  Last year I wanted to run for fun, pure enjoyment of the sport and I believe I did that.  My other goal was to start trail running more consistently and I did that as well.

So, I put the time in and thought about 2009 seriously and my “theme” for this year is to resolve to run so I can be the best me!  What that means to me is to take my training seriously but not too seriously, to not dwell on my race times because that, for me, causes my anxiety to raise and that would not be being the best me!  I want to continue to run for pure enjoyment, to run with more of you outside of club training times, to get out on the trails as often as possible to experience the beauty of the parks in our area, I want to run to experience the blessings I have been given.  I want to give back more to the sport by volunteering more this year.  I believe then I will have accomplished my best!

I was on the New Balance website yesterday to look up some shirts for the team this year and I loved their home page.  They had people’s resolutions scrolling down the page and a few really struck me that I would like to share.  Some are serious and some are funny but you should check them out, one might grab you and become your “theme” for this year.  Here are a few:

I want to save my own life.

I will be my own hero.

I will not let myself remain dormant.

I want to give back.

I will run a marathon.

I resolve to finish, just to finish.

I will not stay this size.

I resolve to cross the finish line.

I resolve to not be a fatty mcbutterpants.

I resolve to make myself healthy.

I will take something seriously.

Now, what is your 2009 resolution?  Please share on this blog as I feel by sharing in a public space you are taking your resolution seriously and you are most likely motivating another fellow runner.

Stay warm!

What has the club done for you?

I have a huge favor for anyone reading this blog, could you spend a few minutes writing a few sentences about what MSRC (running) has done for you and your life?  I am working on more testimonials for the website.  If you write on the blog I am hoping that means I have permission to use your testimonial and possibly picture if you let me on the website.  Thanks for taking the time!

Beautiful Afton!

First off, Sarah Magnuson ran the Phoenix Rock N Roll Marathon today, congratulations Sarah, you did great!!!

Most of you know I run long on Sundays as I am coaching on Saturdays.  Today I was supposed to get up and run 9 miles and believe me, I needed to burn some calories after going out for Corey’s birthday party last night.  I highly recommend San Pedro Cafe in Hudson, WI.  I have never had a bad meal there and they have the BEST key lime pie!

Ok, back to my day today, when I saw the snow falling so beautifully I thought to myself I should get out to Afton for a snowshoe hike/run.  It was a hard decision but Afton won out.  The temperature was  perfect, had 2 layers on top and tights on the bottom and was hot!  There was a lot of hollering from the Ski area, many out enjoying the day!  I was out for 2 hours all over the park and I think I saw a total of 5 people.  The parking lot was full but it is such a big park it is easy to be by yourself.  It was heaven, honestly, the peacefullness was much needed!  I love Sunday football as I do not feel guilty about leaving the house for 2-3 hours!  I was going along so well but could tell my heels were being rubbed raw.  I was able to handle the uncomfortable feeling until the last mile when I was hiking up a steep hill and got to the flat area at the top and felt extreme pain, I have tore my right heel open, ouch!  I was forced to take my snowshoes off and walk/gimp back to my car.  All said in done, I was out 2 hours (about 10 minutes was spent giving people directions) and got in almost 7 miles.  Probably pretty slow but it was awesome!  Afton has some intense hills and I tried to hit as many as I could so I feel pretty good about this workout.  I ran maybe a total of 2 miles of the almost 7 so you can tell I was not Type A about this workout today.  I love to hike and I do not do enough of it anymore as I am always running so it felt nice to take it a bit easier and enjoy my surroundings today.

Please, I really mean this, make it a point to get out to Afton or any state park this winter as the snow is awesome!  You could even hike with Yaktracs on the snowshoe trails at Afton (4 miles of snowshoe specific trails).  Snowshoe trails are pretty packed down.  There were even some hearty trail runners out there today in trail running shoes, tough workout but I can not blame them, too pretty of a day to pass up!

Strategies to Eat Better – Nancy Clark

Strategies to Eat Better

I READ THIS ARTICLE AND REALLY WANTED TO PASS IT ON TO YOU ALL.  GOOD MOTIVATION TO LOVE YOUR BODY THE WAY IT IS, CHOOSE HAPPINESS OVER DESPAIR, GOOD STUFF!

Body Image and Runners

Question: What are two things dogs and runners have in common?
Answer: One, both dogs and runners love to exercise. Two, they both come in different sizes and shapes.

Question: What is one thing dogs and runners do NOT have in common?
Answer: Dogs are content with their natural physiques, while too many runners try very hard to change the way they look. These runners might be better off being like dogs. That is, does that bulky St. Bernard yearn to look like a lanky Greyhound? Heavens, no! Does the barrel-chested Labrador want to look like a sleek Setter? Doubtful. Each dog is very proud to represent his breed. Wouldn’t life be easier if each runner could be just as proud of his or her “breed”?

As a sports dietitian, I spend too many hours helping runners find peace with their bodies. Most of these runners take the outside-in approach. They think if they change their body from the outside by losing undesired body fat or by adding some muscular bulk, they will be happier on the inside. Unfortunately, not true!

No weight will ever be good enough to do the enormous job of creating happiness. This story, told to me by an athlete, proves that point: “I once weighed 124 pounds and was unhappy with that weight. I started exercising and dieting rigidly. I lost to 99 pounds but I still wasn’t happy. I ended up binge-eating; I gained to 160 pounds, where I was miserable. I sought help from a counselor, stopped eating emotionally, and with time, got my weight back to 124—and was happy! Why couldn’t I have been happy at 124 pounds in the first place? Because happiness has nothing to do with weight…”

Granted, some people do have excess body fat they can appropriately lose to be healthier as a person and lighter as an runner. They can rightfully feel pleased when they accomplish the goal of attaining an appropriate weight. But other runners just think they have excess fat to lose; they have distorted body images. A survey of 425 collegiate female athletes reports the women wanted to lose 5 pounds, on average (1). Another survey of the top women runners in the country found the same results (2). Even these elite runners wistfully believed they would perform better if they are leaner. Unfortunately, the struggle to attain a “perfect weight” can cost runners their health and happiness. Restrictive diets with inadequate protein, iron, zinc, calcium and a myriad of other health-protective nutrients—to say nothing of carbs for fuel—often contribute to injuries and poorer performance.

So what can you do if you are discontent with your body? First of all, you should get your body fat measured to determine if you actually have excess fat to lose. Data can be helpful. (Find a local sports dietitian to measure your body fat via the referral network at SCANdpg.org.) You may discover you have less body fat than expected!

Feeling fat
It’s easy to understand why so many runners have distorted body images. When you put on skimpy running shorts that expose your “flabby things”, or tights that shows every bump and bulge, you can very easily “feel fat.” Sound familiar?

One solution to the “I feel fat syndrome” is to remember “fat” is not a feeling. That is, you don’t feel “blond hair” or “freckled.” You also do not feel “fat.” Yes, you may be feeling uncomfortable with your body. But you are really feeling imperfect, inadequate, insecure, anxious—and any number of other feelings that get described as “feeling fat.”

I encourage you to explore those real feelings, and figure out where you got the message that something is wrong with your body. The media is a good start, but it could also be a parent who lovingly said at a tender age “That outfit looks nice, honey, but if only you’d lose a few pounds…” What you hear is “I’m not good enough” and this can create a downward spiral of self-esteem. Weight issues are rarely about weight. They tend to be about feeling inadequate and imperfect.

What to do
So how can a discontent runner feel better about his or her body? One tactic is to stop comparing yourself to your peers. To compare is to despair. Rather, pretend you live on an island where your body is “good enough” the way it is. (You are unlikely to ever have a “perfect” body, so the second best option is to enjoy a body that is “good enough.”) If you step off your island and start comparing yourself to your peers, please notice: Do you end up being too fat, too slow, too ugly, too dumb? Do you ever let yourself rise to the top and be better than others? Doubtful.

You are better off staying on your island, and calling yourself a Gorgeous Goddess or Handsome Hulk. With time and practice, you can change the way you see yourself and come to believe perhaps you are, indeed, good enough the way you are! Granted, changing the way you feel about your body is a complex process. The following resources can help you in this journey to find peace with your body:
www.nourishingconnections.com (free e-newsletter)
www.findingbalance.com (has videos about resolving weight issues)
www.adiosBarbie.com (offers resources, and insights into the media)
For a plethora of books, visit the online bookshelf at www.gurze.com. Some of my favorites include The Body Image Workbook and The Don’t Diet, Live-It Workbook.

Life is more enjoyable when you can love your body and appreciate it for all it does and stop hating it for what it is not. When the drive for thinness comes with a high price, that price is unlikely worth the cost.
